Rockhurst University Economics Department

The Policy track is an outstanding preparation for students who either want to continue graduate study or pursue careers immediately after graduation. Graduate programs include those in law, public administration, graduate social science programs such as in economics, political science, and sociology, interdisciplinary programs such as planning and urban development, environment and sustainability, economic development and development studies, and a wide variety of specialized administrative programs such as health administration.

Students who decide to get practical experience immediately out of Rockhurst have a vast array of options. These range from jobs in various organizations from local to global, including government. Traditional careers in regulatory capacities such as the Federal Reserve Bank or other government agencies are expanding since regulation is increasing due to the world stock market crash of 2008. Consulting opportunities are prevalent in insurance, banking, financial market regulation, and financial market policy. Students find great opportunities in service, manufacturing and agriculture firms, health care, and utility companies. State and local government, and federal and international regulatory agencies and international organizations have job opportunities for economic majors.

It is highly recommended that students pursuing the Policy: Global, National, and Industrial track also take PS 1100 - American Federal and State Government  as their second Science Relational Level I course.

Related Upper-division Coursework

Twelve hours of related upper-division courses are also required and are to be chosen under the direction of the major advisor.

Those students who are preparing for entry into graduate studies in economics should also take at a minimum Calculus I and II and consider minoring or majoring in Mathematics. Dual degrees in Economics and Mathematics are an attractive preparation for graduate school in the field of Economics.
