HS 3935 - Nonviolent Movements in the Contemporary World (PAI 3935 ) (3) What constitutes “nonviolence”? Is violence ever involved in nonviolent movements? Have nonviolent movements made a lasting impact on the history of societies in which they occur? This course will explore the historical context, actions, and outcomes of selected nonviolent movements from across the globe. It will examine theoretical foundations for nonviolent activism, the political, economic, and cultural factors that motivated nonviolent movements predominantly outside the United States and strategies used in the movements. Students will engage with leaders and participants in nonviolent activism through primary sources such as speeches, newspapers, letters, and images.
