SP 4700 - The Spanish Golden Age

(3)
This course studies the representative writers of the Spanish Golden Age (1500-1680). Our project is to place Golden Age literature within a wide ranging and complex canvas of daily life rife with the turbulence borne of collisions between ideas and actions of empire, nation, fidelity, religion, violence, adventure, and transgression for a culture situated between an “old” and a “new” world. This course will devote a block of literary content to the Spanish religious literature from the late 15th century to the late 17th century. Students will read and discuss the rich and diverse history of the Christian religious literary tradition in the context of the Iberian Peninsula.

Prerequisite: SP 3150  or approval of instructor.
