PL 2175 - Ethical Theory, Media Ethics and Technology

This course involves a rigorous examination of major ethical theories developed in Western philosophy, including thinkers and theories in the Catholic intellectual tradition.  This will allow an exploration of those fundamental factors involved in moral decision making and the discovery of ethical principles in order to achieve a critical and reasoned understanding of the meaning and basis of morality.  Of particular focus will be the application of ethical principles in media and technology, including issues of reporting vs. advocacy, media and corporate interests, bias, “fake news,” and sensationalism, data collection and privacy, artificial intelligence, and the ethics of advertising.
