PL 3003 - Philosophy, the Human Person, and Nursing

(0)
Nursing is a deeply human-centered practice, as reflected in the nursing-patient relationship in which one person, the nurse, cares for another person in need, the patient. Indeed, the very term “nurse” comes from the activity of “nourishing” another (Partridge, E., Origins, New York: The Macmillan Company, 1958). As such, it is fruitful for a nursing student to reflect upon the philosophical question of, “What makes a human being a person?” Various readings drawn from the history of philosophy, as well as articles from contemporary nursing practice, will help students answer this important question, and come to a richer understanding of the holistic nature of nursing practice, and the ethical obligation of nurses to protect the inherent value and dignity of the patients served.

Enrollment is restricted to students transferring into the BSN program. This is a graduation requirement course.
