Department of Exercise, Sport, and Health Science

The Rockhurst University Exercise, Sport, and Health Science Department helps students reach their potential through quality instruction and application-based learning focused on recognizing and caring for the whole person.  Three majors and two minors are offered.  All majors require the successful completion of no fewer than 128 semester credit hours, including a practicum or internship experience.  Students should be aware that a criminal background check is required.  The presence of any criminal conviction on a student’s record may affect his/her eligibility for participating in clinical internships, becoming certified or licensed, and/or securing a job in the student’s field.

Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science

The Bachelor of Science is an interdisciplinary major that prepares graduates for careers in areas such as personal training and/or conditioning in sports and fitness clubs, sport performance enhancement, and corporate wellness, as well as for graduate study in exercise science-related disciplines.  Students who wish to pursue graduate degrees in either occupational therapy or physical therapy may choose electives to satisfy additional prerequisites for these program.

Bachelor of Science in Health Science

The Bachelor of Science in Health Science is an interdisciplinary major that prepares graduates to work within a health-related setting in administrative, managerial, and technical positions, as well as to attend graduate school.  Students choose one of two tracks: Community Health Management or Health and Disability. Students who wish to pursue graduate degrees in either occupational therapy or physical therapy may choose electives to satisfy additional prerequisites for these program.

Bachelor of Science in Sport Management

The Bachelor of Science in Sport Management prepares graduates for positions in sport marketing and communication, and facilities and event management.  Students are encouraged to pursue a minor aligned with their goals in order to enhance their qualifications.  Nonprofit leadership studies, general business, journalism, communication, and business administration pre-MBA are among the many choices.  Those who successfully complete requirements for the business administration pre-MBA minor may be eligible for an accelerated option MBA at Rockhurst University.

Physical Education (PE)

The specific aims of the Physical Education area are to: 1) increase understanding of the value and role of physical activity as an important dimension of the human condition; 2) develop performance skills in certain physical activities; 3)  encourage, through satisfying learning experiences, the participation habit.

Offerings are available as electives for students interested in broadening their knowledge of health, exercise, fitness and sports activities, especially those which provide lifelong enjoyment.
