Special Undergraduate Academic and Co-Curricular Programs

Each accredited College of Veterinary Medicine establishes their own set of prerequisite courses, including both specific science courses and general courses designed to prepare students for working with clients and the public.  There is no official “pre-vet program” required to enter veterinary school but Rockhurst University does offer courses that are required for any veterinary college to which students may apply.  The Core Curriculum required for all Rockhurst majors also provides solid preparation for taking the GRE which is required as part of the application process.  Veterinary schools want students who are well-rounded, articulate in their communication, able to solve problems and think critically about new challenges, capable of adapting their study skills to new disciplines, able to effectively manage their time commitments, and specifically knowledgeable about the veterinary profession.  Shadowing hours are required by all veterinary schools and the RU pre-vet advisor is a veterinarian with contacts throughout the Kansas City area.  Any student interested in veterinary medicine should meet with Dr. Elizabeth Evans (in the Biology Department) to set up a plan for shadowing and for assistance throughout the application process for veterinary school.
