ARMY ROTC Teaches You to Lead

Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) is one of the best leadership courses in the country and is part of your college curriculum.  During classes and field training, you will learn first-hand what it takes to lead others, motivate groups and how to conduct missions as an Officer in the Army.  Upon graduation from Army ROTC, you will earn the bar of a Second Lieutenant and become a leader for life.

College-graduate junior executive managers for the U.S. Army are provided by the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program administered by the Department of Military Science.  Traditional four-year baccalaureate-degree aspirants may qualify for a commission as an officer by completing military science courses. With the exceptions of a four-week paid summer experience, all instruction is presented on UMKC’s Hospital Hill campus. Various field trips are conducted to further enrich the student’s appreciation of national defense in its broadest sense and to develop leadership and managerial skills.

The United States Army commissions 2nd Lieutenant rank to the individual who completes either the two-year or four-year ROTC program and obtains a baccalaureate degree from Rockhurst University as a partnership university with MSWU’s Department of Military Science.  Currently, a college graduate who is commissioned through ROTC is placed on active or reserve duty, depending on his or her desires and on the needs of the service at the time of graduation.

Army ROTC Benefits

Army ROTC is one of the Nation’s top leadership programs, with many benefits to joining.  Through Army ROTC you can:

  • Get help with your college tuition with an Army ROTC scholarship
  • Gain experience you can’t find anywhere else
  • Gain the respect of your peers and future employers
  • Train to become a leader and manager
Financial Assistance

Financial assistance is available through the U.S. Army Scholarship Program.  Two-, three- and four-year scholarships are awarded each year to selected students who are enrolled or will enroll in the Army ROTC program.  The scholarships provide payment of tuition, fees, textbooks and a monthly tax-free payment of $200 for the duration of the scholarship, not to exceed 10 months for each year of the scholarship.  These scholarships are available for both undergraduate and graduate students.  Non-scholarship contracted cadets in the advanced portion of ROTC receive undergraduate and graduate students.  Non-scholarship contracted cadets in the advanced portion of ROTC receive $200 each month, not to exceed 10 months per year for two years.  Students are furnished free textbooks for military science classes.

The Simultanious Membership Program (SMP) allows students to be a member of a National Guard or Reserve unit while enrolled in ROTC.  Advanced course SMP students receive E5 pay, plus $200 per month from ROTC, plus any Active Duty GI Bill entitlement.

Curriculum

All students are eligible to take Military Science 1000- and 2000-level courses without any military obligation.  However, Military Science 3000- and 4000-level courses are reserved for students who have a signed contract with ROTC to become an officer upon graduation.
