HS 3050 - Medieval History

This course examines medieval Europe and the Mediterranean basin from the end of the Roman Empire until the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Special emphasis will be placed on high and late medieval Europe and the twelfth-century renaissance. Topics to be addressed include feudalism and manoralism, the rise of Islam and the Islamic world, Byzantium, the Crusades, education and the rise of universities, the Black Death, foundations of government and law, women and gender in the medieval world, and the culture of violence and chivalry.
