HS 3100 - Renaissance and Reformation

This course reviews the significant events, personalities, ideas and developments during the period of the Renaissance and Reformation in the western world (c. 1400-1600). Topics to be addressed include the growth of humanism; the development of art and literature in Italy and northern Europe; the voyages of discovery; the causes of the Reformation; the ideas and actions of Luther, Calvin, and Henry VIII; the ideas and activities of radical reformers; the Catholic Counter-Reformation, including the Council of Trent and the early history of the Society of Jesus; and the wars of religion in Europe.
