Mission
The mission of the medical assisting program is to provide a stimulating academic environment that will prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The integration of knowledge and skills will prepare the student so that they may function as contributing members of the health care team, positively impacting their patients, the community and the profession upon graduation.
Program Goals
- Prepare graduates with cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills and knowledge required of entry-level medical assistants in administrative, clinical and laboratory areas in ambulatory healthcare work environments in the following areas: Foundations for Clinical Practice, Applied Communications, Medical Business Practices, Medical Law & Ethics and Safety & Emergency Practices.
- Prepare graduates for the national certification exam for medical assistants administered by the American Medical Technologist.
- Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills used in the scope of practice by medical assistants
Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to demonstrate applied communications (abbreviations for prescriptions) used in the medical setting demonstrating a gain in scores of >20% with the Post Testing.
- Students will recall and define accurate medical terminology by scoring an average of 80% or better on the terminology component quizzes built into MAST1010.
- Earning a rubric scored grade of > 80%; Students will analyze the Case study and apply the critical thinking process to evaluate the given circumstances and offer alternative solutions. To the patient’s satisfaction.
Medical Assisting Certificate Requirements
The Medical Assisting Certificate may be issued to students who complete 32 credit hours in the required courses. See Medical Assisting Certificate .
Saint Luke’s offers Certificate students the “one plus” option in which they may continue on after earning the Certificate to earn the Associate of Science degree in Medical Assisting by completing the additional 28 credit hours towards the 60 credits required for the Associate of Science in Medical Assisting degree.
Associate of Science in Medical Assisting Degree Requirements
Upon the recommendation of the faculty, the College will confer the degree of Associate of Science in Medical Assisting upon students who have fulfilled the following requirements:
- Completion of the required 60 hours in the program of study for the Associate of Science in Medical Assisting degree. At least 15 of those MUST be earned from Rockhurst University to meet the residency requirement.
- Completion of the 60 semester hours of coursework within three years of enrollment at Rockhurst University.
- A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 with no grade below C counting towards graduation.

Students who transfer into Rockhurst’s Medical Assisting program with a current Medical Assisting Certificate (with evidence of transcripted MA program coursework) may earn the Associate of Science degree in Medical Assisting by completing the required additional 32 credits through the School of Health Sciences.
