Graduation Requirements:


The Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders requires a minimum of 48 credit hours of academic coursework and clinical education/practicum credits for graduation. If enrolled fulltime, the program is structured for completion in 5 semesters. If enrolled part time, the program is structured for completion in 8 semesters.

Academic Coursework and Clinical Practicum Requirements:

  • 37 credit hours of required academic coursework
  • 7 credit hours of clinical education and practicum experience
  • 4 credit hours of elective coursework
  • Successful completion of the culminating project that reflects integration of academic and clinical knowledge and skills across the breadth and depth of speech-language pathology practice.
  • Completion of a minimum of 400 hours of supervised clinical experience. At least 25 hours must be spent in guided observation and at least 375 hours must be spent in direct client/patient contact. At minimum, 325 hours of the 375 must be completed at the graduate level. Up to 50 hours from an undergraduate clinical practicum may be approved to count toward the 375. At least 3 different practice settings must be represented within the 375 hours.
  • Successful completion of all clinical practice and academic competencies must occur prior to graduation. These competencies are outlined in the Knowledge and Skill Acquisition (KASA) document and tracked electronically through CALIPSO. Students have access to CALIPSO to confirm progression in the program as needed.

If a student requires deceleration of the clinical sequence or extended clinical learning opportunities are necessary to meet competencies, the following course may be added to the plan of study to provide additional clinical practicum opportunities during the Summer of Year 2 of the full time program. This extends the program of study by 1 additional semester (from 5 semesters to 6 semesters) and department approval is required:
